President Trump wants to “Make America Great Again” and restore the “American Dream” for all Americans, especially our children and grandchildren. To accomplish his objectives, many ideas—radical to most people—will be implemented. Just to name a few, President Trump will significantly reduce regulations, tap our abundant energy resources, use tariffs to negotiate better trade deals, impose reciprocal tariffs to negotiate fair, or ultimately free trade with other countries, and cut federal income taxes.
With respect to taxes, President Trump has floated the idea of doing away with the federal income tax and replacing it with excise taxes and customs duties or tariffs. Trump wants to bring us back to the time when the United States of America was extremely prosperous, when there was no income tax, no tax on corporations, and no payroll taxes.
The Founders and Framers of the United States of America believed that direct taxes (e.g., taxes on the wages of labor or the income tax) were dangerous and natural to slavery, while indirect taxes or taxes on the sale of merchandise (e.g., tariffs) were more natural to liberty. That’s why there was no federal income tax while our Founders were alive; and for the first 168 years of our existence, the primary source of federal revenue was from excise taxes and customs duties or tariffs.
